02.07. 08:54 Day 8 about to begin?!
8.45; A bit of a cool
morning, blue skies , some overcast, but also cirrus and cirrus firmaments.
Yesterday the weather turned out much better then expected. I heard from
some of the pilots ; “ We started too early”! More decisions to make as
competition day 8 is about to begin and then 2 more days before this great JWGC
is over, with a party and dinner on Saturday evening. It went too quick!!!
Time flies when you have fun ! Prize giving ceremony on Sunday morning at
10.00. Let's see what Janne says about the weather for today!Yesterday he
was "spot on".
02.07. 09:23 Racing tasks will be set !
9.10; TC briefing is
over . PILOTS BRIEFING WILL BE AT 10.00 Janne expects mainly good
weather, as these cloud layers are expected to disappear and Silva and his team
will set an A and B racing task. A will be to the East , the West and back
B will be without the East area when the weather is good too late. They
expect the first launch at 11.30 ! More news later ! Todays PROFILE; the
TC from Poland , Mateusz, still a bit sick as we can clearly see but….on duty!
02.07. 11:02
10.30; Briefing is over. Task A for today,
at this stage ; Club class; Polygon with 5 points---distance; 344.2 km.
Standard class; Polygon with 8 points distance 556.8 km B task is
delivered after the briefing as well, will come back on that when necessary.
Prize winners Tim Kuijpers from Holland and Jan Boruvka from Czech Rep.
received an orange cap and the bottle. Very appropriate for Tim as the Dutch
“ are very orange”!
The weather seems to be good. Did we still have
overcast before briefing , when we came out of the briefing hangar, the skies
were blue with nice cumulus clouds. It is not only hallelujah as sea breaze
might effect the task area today , as well as some spread out in the afternoon
with possible local showers. On the other hand due to a 15 to 20 knot wind
CU streeting is possible as well. Cloud base at 1500 to 2000 m. later in the
day. Temperature 26 dgr.
Not a perfect day, but a good one according to
Janne and a promising one according to Silva.
Unfortunately tomorrow
does not look too good, but you never know! A frontal system will hang over
Rayskala with high and middle clouds but not much rain.
Trackers in; FX,
N9, 4J, CG, GX, YX, G1, 7Q, PW, BR. More news in a minute as I miss the
final part of the story.
02.07. 11:06 Pilots prepare for a nice long task ! 344.2 km and
556.8 km.!
Sorry, more about today's briefing. Today Silva spend quite
some time on several safety issues. He showed as well some tracks and forced the
young pilots to look at possible dangers. It was pretty quiet in there, but for
sure they got the message.
02.07. 12:34 Task A ......startline opens at 12.50 for St. class
with 556.8 km to go !
12.30; Task A is valid! First launch was at 11.45
sharp after some delay first. In 35 minutes the Standard class was launched by 7
tuggies! The skies looked great , there were several thermals and lift was even
found in the blue. But…the last part of the st.class had some problems to get
high, it was a bit more blue over the field, reason for Silva to look first what
they did before sending the club class up in the air, After 4 minutes, he
saw the gliders climb and the 8th tuggie was the first to launch Y in club
class. The start line for standard class will open at 12 50.
02.07. 13:30 All gliders are up in the air !
13.00; Club
class had smooth launches as well and their gate opens at 13.31, for a 344.2 km.
task, so task A. Heavy thermals on the ground and gliders were at one point
really kept by 2 people . Some of the team tents had to be kept on the ground .
Also the outside-office-tent tried to go up. Maria sitting there, has her
name-day today and she shared for this occasion some candy; wine gums and
chocolate.
It will be a long wait for st. class and for sure 4 hours for
club class. Standard class is allowed to go on track, but at this stage I do
not see any start times. Start times have to be delivered within half an
hour at the office or by email. My experience is that the ones brought in, are
on the result- site earlier.
Will be back with updates in between.
02.07. 15:52 Difficulties up North !
15.30; The pilots seem
to have some problems on their way . The showers up to the N TP seem to be there
and causing delay, which is not good as for a 556 km task you need at least 5
hours, but then you also need an average speed of OVER 100 km /h. Pilots fly
through “dead areas” , after showers have passed where they are. Also club
class had problems with showers up N. But…we also hear it goes “fine” with some
very strong lift at some places. First to start in st. class were leaving at
13.10 the last at 13.56. so at nearly 14.00 they had to still fly at least 5
hours. Club class pilots left between 13.42 and 14.19 . Both classes
have a few TP’s to cover, even 8 for St. class. I hope they don’t get confused!
They fly as well between “forbidden zones”, but they should be used to that
now!. Here in Rayskala it still looks good with some high overcast but with
clouds under that. Let’s hope , wait and see!!!!
02.07. 15:59 I would like you to meet ....... Mateusz Jedral
!
While waiting today for the pilots to come back you can read in the
PROFILE a bit more about the TC from Poland. He is still not the fittrest person
on earth but ...on duty as yesterday! Here is the story ! Thanks Mateusz !!!!
First of all thank You for inviting me. It is big pleasure to be a
Team Captain of a national junior team. About me : I’m 28 yrs old. I live in
south-west part of Poland in Opole city, which is famous of song festival. I fly
in local aeroclub. I’m currently unemployed, but I’m working on opening my own
business with gliding equipment. I finished secondary school with technician
diploma in electronics, then I studied 1st degree obtaining engineer diploma in
Management and production engineering at local Technical Univeristy and this
year I ended my masters degree education at National Defense academy with
specialization Aviation Management. Gliding it’s my hobby since I remember.
It is a special – original life style, character creator. Since last year I am
gliding instructor and for almost 5 years I am competition pilot – starting
polish juniors in 2004. I was there 4th in club class. Last success was 5th
place during open regional competition in Leszno where I was flying DuoDiscus
which I found very nice. I started my adventure as a TC 2 years ago in
Rieti, finding it very challenging and hard work. It was a bit luck that I
became TC in 2007. Our junior gliding team coach couldn’t go, so I was choosen
from the list of crew members as a most experienced person with gliding
competition. After those 2 years I think most challenging part of this work is
the team building. When that’s done, we just all have to do their jobs, and have
fun during competition. It’s sounds easy, trust me it’s not J I always try to
learn and improve my performance to help my team get better. Now I am very
happy to be here with all of You in Rayskala, and I am very proud of my team.
Best regards Mateusz Jedral Dear Ritz, I forgot to add that I’m
also a member of Airsoft Gun team. So between time that I fly I travel a lot
around a Poland. And how I manage to get time for it ? I am still single J
To start living on my own I emigrated to Ireland in 2005 after obtaining
diploma at technical university, than I came back in 2007 to go to Rieti, and start masters degree in Warsaw’s National Defense Academy.
02.07. 16:30 BR landed out here...some other outlandings as well
!
16.00 update. At this time I heard on the radio ;…BR …..so Peter
Bertels from Belgium is landing his Standard Libelle here at the airport. On the
way from the East to the West they pass by North of Rayskala, so an “escape” ,
when necessary is possible. Peter did not try to escape but he wanted to
find lift over Rayskala where it still does n’t look too bad. Unfortunately he
could not find good lift and decided to land here. Trailer T 1 is hooked on
the car……as well as G2. 2 official outlandings on the board; N9 [Argentina]
and IV [ Switzerland. From the TC from Norway I heard one of their pilots
has landed near to Hameenlina. A VERY difficult day, but....some say, that’s
what it is supposed to be.....
02.07. 17:17 Big difficulties...great joy !
17.00 ; More
trailers are hooked on…… crew members bring in the out landing place from their
pilot at the office…..parachutists here jump out from high above us and have
fun…..the TC from the USA looks a bit worried…. But I hear also that some
Club class pilots have a “crazy turning vario” with 3 and 4 m. lift. There seems
to be a big gaggle together. The west looks good from here, so….if they are not
confronted with more showers, they even might come back.....for a while I was
doubting that. More official out landings ;28, G2, T1, CM, S, XC, IC, Y.
And…..T1 is the current number 1 in the overall scores in standard class.
Sad,very sorry to hear this, but ....this is gliding too. Wow, there will be
big changes in the overall results tonight. Stand by for more news.
02.07. 17:56 " Finnish 3 " back home ! 28 still
flying!!!
17.50; The first gliders in club class have arrived home. With
big speed they came in and landed.N1, G1 and IY. The “ Finnish 3”.
One
mistake on the official board with out- landings; 28 is still flying and Z8 had
out landed. Even when I checked in the office , they confirmed 28, but when
one of the Dutch crew members definitely said it could not be 28, as he was
still flying, they came to the conclusion it was Z8. Thanks to the Dutch team
for the clarification!
02.07. 18:06 " Austrian 3 " in club class back as well before
18.00!
18.00; 3 more finishes; TB, FB, ML.” The Austrian 3”. Back to the
field where the 3 young Finnish pilots received an applause from the crowd .
02.07. 18:29 More finishes !!!!!
18.25; More gliders made it
back home. At 18.08 CI, at 18.10, BF, at 18.12 IS and 1F.
One
trailer back home from retrieve.
One more finish BW3 at 18.20 and how
hard Volker from Germany worked to find enough lift to make it home. We could
see him struggle to come higher and higher for his final glide home….but he made
it without a problem, it only cost him some time!
02.07. 18:41 First standard class finish; FL at 18.35
!
18.40; First standard class glider FL arrived home!!! Felipe Levin from
Germany arrived back at 18.35. More gliders in standard class have come
back; C41 and V20 arrived. For sure the most difficult day during this
competition.
02.07. 19:07 More finishes ...4 now in standard class!
19.00;
More gliders back in standard class and one only just made it! Back before
19.00.....149, 4J and GR. Before more landings in club class HS at 18.45 and
PW at 18.50.
In total at this stage 14 in and 14 out in club class.
A wonderful areal picture was made from IC in a huge field not far from
here. Somebody arriving with the Cessna -on -floats , flying home here and
landing on the lake ,made this picture about half an hour ago. Stand
by.....but.... it is already 19.00.
02.07. 19:48 They still arrive home.....number 5 in standard
class !
19.45; More finishers ; Finished before 7Q, 99, YX. No time
sorry! 19.24 2S 19.25 74 19.28 P7 19.41 FU And…..1 more in
standard class N8. Only one not accounted for in club class at this stage;
TF.
02.07. 20:52 20.40...still finishers !
20.45; It still looks
flyable though it also looks that the clouds are dying. More finishers as at
19.56 W8 arrived home at 20.09 AX and at 20.08 KC. and just a few minutes ago SI
and DI made it back home. One pilot said that he saw another pilot low and
the wheel out to land when he found “something” and could continue his flight.
What a day!!!!!
02.07. 21:49 21.35....last landings !!
21.40; 2 Norwegian
pilots and 2 Dutch pilots just landed about 30 km out. At 21.00 they were still
flying at 1000 m. and may be it was possible to make it
home….0.6…0.7…Tension…would they make it!!!! But in the end they landed at
21.35. A pity that they could not make it home. After 9 hours and 30 minutes of
flying !!!!! What and experience to be able to still fly at 21.30!!!
Only 12 pilots in standard class made it home. Great flight from German
pilot Felipe Levin on a day like this, flying with a speed of 103 km/h.
KLASSE!!! 24 Club class pilots made it home. The Austrian pilots did a great
job, the brothers Tobias and Fabian Stumpfl surprised mum and dad, who arrived
here today, with a great WIN!!!Well done!!
That’s it for today! A long
day , a difficult day and a very surprising day! What-a-day!!!!
