July 4th 2009

04.07. 08:56 Everybody is ready for competition day 9 !!!

8.30;Everybody is ready for the last competition day, but ….. I don’t know, about this weather for today and that’s why we have Janne, so with extra interest we are going to listen to him in the TC briefing and later in the pilots briefing.
It is “ cold “ and cloudy….. But…Janne might have “found “ something to fly in, as since yesterday evening, he was already “working” on today’s weather.

Crews and pilots have rigged the gliders and are bringing them to the grid and everybody is ready for day 9, out of the possible 11 days …not bad!! Very good!

04.07. 09:18 An AAT is set ........ 2.30 !!!

9.10; 4th of July….. happy birthday USA!!!
Janne “might “ have found the gap. He thinks we can fly….so an AAT from 2.30 has been set, but Silva will follow the weather, to also make this last day a good and safe one.
Runway 30 is in use and the first possible launch will be at 11.30 for the club class then standard class.

The glider which had some damage was repaired overnight. A special thank you to the French team for their help!!!!Great spirit!!!

Good part of the cold weather is , that there will be less mosquito’s tonight visiting the final party.
Kari , one of the tuggies , is always walking around barefoot. Today as well; “Are you not cold Kari????” No there is no snow outside” !!!!!!
Back to the pilots briefing now!

04.07. 10:24 Janne thinks.....the pilots can go for their AAT !

9.45; The last briefing is over . Tasks have been set ;
Club class; AAT with 3 areas ---time 2.30---distance;152.6 km/ 423.7 km [281]
Standard class; AAT with 3 areas---time 12.30---distance; 157.1 km/421.9 km[281.7 km]

While waiting, Harry Sundstrom, the man behind the PR and marketing here, played “live” receiving a big applause. The briefing started with a very nice presentation of the WGC in 2010 in Priviedza [Slovak Republic] . On the music “ Blackmore’s night” , we received a fantastic invitation to fly or visit over there, with even a view on the Bojnice castle. Thank you to the Slovak team.
A nice folder and booklet from Aerospool and the aeroklub Priviedza, " when flying, then flying with us", with all you have to know about Priviedza, was on our tables.

The weather; So important today! There is a frontal system SW of Finland. Janne thinks the showers predicted for later in the day [ around 18.00 here !] will not effect the weather in the task area during the task time. There is still some uncertainty with the evolution of the higher clouds.
So as said before ,Silva will check the weather and if possible the pilots fly!!!

The interest in flying in the next JWGC in Musbach was checked and Axel said “it looks we will be very full”.Great!!!!

Teemu and his wife from the Café said thank you to everybody and offered a HAPPY HOUR tonight between 7 and 8.

Ready to go for day 9. In the PROFILE today, the Office Babes and young Finnish pilot Altti Korva.

04.07. 12:54 Club class in the air, not yet very high !

12.45;
No stress on the faces of the pilots but…on the face of the CD. First launch after some delay at 12.00 for club class glider KS.
Pilots were not too high and searching for lift everywhere , ending up in one big gaggle and ...going up!
Start line for club class will open at 13.11. Standard class launches in progress now!

04.07. 13:53 Day 9 is a fact !! What will this last day bring ?????

13.45; Standard class has been launched and the start line will be open at 13.50.
What do we see looking up in the air; some nice cumulus clouds, some blue air, some overcast and some lenties or lentie- look-alikes .
For sure not an easy day for the pilots …this last competition day of the 6th JWGC.
After the launches the tuggies gave a nice flight- pass in formation and after that a good looking low pass each.
They lined up just over the trees, flying low but not too low, which made the Aussie TC say ; “ They have to stay below the gaggles !”
That says more or less how the situation was at noon.
But...this is a world championship!!!!
Marina and I , both having visited so many comps in our lives had a tear in our eyes. It remains a special moment, such a flight pass from the tuggies!!!
THANK YOU to all the several tow pilots flying the 8 tugs, for their great job!!!
Also THANK YOU to the field runners and “their boss” Wille; what a huge job they did!!! Compliments for all of them !

04.07. 14:30 I would like you to meet ....the ladies from the office ; the " office-babes "!

As I said before already, everybody here is so friendly.The office babes always have a smile on their face, help where they can help and support where they can support. So THANK YOU to the office babes. Great job done during this competition and before!!!!Here is their story;

----Heey, so cool to get own place in Ritz’s corner! We’re the office “babes”, the pink team trying to serve team captains, pilots and crew as well as we can. We are Maria (21), Krista (20) and Elina (19). I’m sure I can say this behalf of all of us that we really have enjoyed this competition with so many interesting and nice people around. Early mornings and late evenings feel lighter with smiling faces! We have all spent pretty much every summer in Räyskälä ever since we were kids, Krista with the longest “career” as EFRY-local. She first came here at the age of 6 months. Me and Elina have both GPL but we are still in the beginning of learning this best aviation sport in the world. In real life we are all studying, and at the moment we are having a summer vacation. Two of us, Krista and Elina are about to start university in the autumn and I’m going to continue my business studies (next autumn in Germany!). We are happy to see this event going so well and all people from around the world getting along with each other. We hope the contacts we made here will last and that we will see all of you in later competitions! Thank you for these unforgettable weeks and hopefully see you somewhere!----

04.07. 15:08 Most pilots left quickly after the line opened !

14.30 update; Several gliders in standard class dropped their water while being launched! But…it seems not too bad on the way up to the first cylinder SW from Rayskala . While listening to the pilots they are chirpy , have good lift .The cloud base allowed for today in the sectors is 1834 m[6014 QNH] .But…they have to come back too and it is overcast here at the moment.
The first to leave in club class was Australian pilot, Nathan Johnson at 13.18.The last ones the Swedish pilots at 14.04.
Both classes have the same task, so they might be able to help each other today.
First in Standard class left at 13.50, the Dutch and the Germans, no tactics …just go!! The French started last at 14.01.
They [ st. ] fly now one hour and have reached the 2d cylinder.

You can look at the pictures from the launches and fly-pass on this last flying day on the site already NOW!

04.07. 15:14 I would like you to meet ......Altti Korva as well today !

Flying in Finland means that atleast one Finnish pilot should be able to present himself in the PROFILE.
Here he is young and friendly Altti, flying in standard class .

----Greetings all, I´m a 21 year old student from Espoo, just east from Helsinki. I don´t have any aviation background in my family, so my interest into soaring and aviation in general comes from somewhere deeper inside... Anyway, thanks to the generous sponsorship of my godfather, I had a chance to fly my lisence. I started gliding "career" in 2004 at Nummela airfield, 40 km south of Räyskälä. Because the airspace at Nummela is quite narrow due to the Helsinki TMA, one has to push further from the airfield to fly longer days. Partly this encouraged me to start cross country flights fairly early.

My interest to competition flying grew year after year, so after working in the competition organisation of the Finnish nationals in 2006 and 2007, I participated in the nationals of 2008 held here at Räyskälä. Although we had only two competition days, the Finnish Junior Team´s captain seemed to be somewhat satisfied, so he asked if I would be interested in flying in the Finnish team in the JWGC 2009. Naturally I was eager to take part in the action, so after the nationals I´ve been flying together with the team preparing for this event.

From my part I would like to thank everyone for contributing to the great feeling at this competiton and all the best for the last day!

Regards, Altti Korva (N3)----

04.07. 15:41 First arrivals soon expected ! Tension is growing !!

15.30; Not long anymore before the first club class pilots come back. And then ....we still do not know anything!! How far did the pilots go in the cylinders… with what speed do they fly…is there delay by rain… or by mistakes…
We have to wait and the flight recorders will tell us, what has happened today!!!
They fly back in the direction of Rayskala where the cylinder is just N. from us. Over here it looks grey, 8/8 of cu’s!!! We just wait and see, tension is rising now!
Will go to the finish line now!

04.07. 16:19 Lot's of gliders have arrived home and are still arriving! Great last day !

15.15; And then we saw them…… some finishing as TK and KS, both at 15.44/ 47 ,some flying high over in 8-formation and 4- formation to make some more kilometers in the cylinder. Then we had to look well as from 2 sites gliders arrived with big speed.
Here they are; between time 15.57 and 16.08 and they are still coming in.
YX, HS, CI, 74, IS, AY, BF, 149, IY, NX, 28, PM, FL, Y4, Y1, 4J, TW, GR, TB, IV, 2A, 2C, CG, TW, GX, 57, GX, SM, H2, C1, IC, FU, AX, IV, V20.

04.07. 17:10 Everybody back or accounted for !

17.00; Well dear friends it is over. Everybody is back and we had 2 out landings for S and SF.
More gliders arrived home as 21, AA, ET, V1, RD, ER, .
Before already more landings from the next gliders, as I saw them drive to the trailer and I still did not see them all; BR, C41, EA, XL, 99, Y, WE and BW 3 who drove with the German flag on the tail of the glider to the trailer. It looks we will have a German winner in each class!!!
But…I will wait till I have the official results.

It is terribly cold outside less then 16 dgr. and we could feel one drop of rain, but it is still dry.
I just congratulated Silva on this big success. What a great director he was!!! With Mari as his deputy we had a “dream team”. It looked always as if everything was easy ,but over the last 2 years they prepared their selves so well, that they were NOW ready for everything.

04.07. 17:55 Congratulations to all pilots for their safe and skilled flying ! And thank you !!!

17.15; The scores will be the last part of this competition and for sure Ville will have them as soon as he can together with his team. They did a great job. Thanks Ville!
The safety and rescue team with Nalle was mostly busy to keep the safety at the airfield ,stopping people to do the wrong things! They had to put some plasters on as well but that part was luckily not busy. Thank you to them!
A big thank you to the chef of the technical department Wellu [ scrutineer] and his team and a special THANK YOU to the TUG MASTER Tikli Makelainen.

The meteorologists, were spot on, so the task- setting -team could every day rely on them. Heikki and Janne THANK YOU! I guess we will have rain around 18.00 as Janne said so!

And last but not least …where would I have been without this great webmaster, building up this easy- to –use- site which looks, as I heard from so many people, just great. KATJA did a MARVELLOUS job!!! THANKS KATJA!!!![ also for the nice red bike]

And now I am busy to say thank you, I will add straightaway the jury members and stewards. I was sitting with them in the same yellow –box and I saw how hard they work. But we all had fun-time too. The jury [ 3] checked the results every day by hand, but had no official complaints or so, which made their life easy, but the 2 stewards are helping/ supporting the organization and had to be up every day early to advise with task setting and other things and with problems as warnings and penalty points in the evening.

What a great competition this was! The weather was more then friendly. May be a THANK YOU to the weather-gods is appropriate as well. For sure the “young ones” go home with fantastic memories on a “cool “ time, to speak their language. Some flew their first 500 km., some the longest flight ever in their life.
Longtime friendships have been established going world wide. Finland was great to all of us!!!! Thank you FINLAND!!! Thank you RAYSKALA!!!

Off to the motel for winter clothes and tomorrow I will be back with the Ritz Corner from Holland, as I leave straight after the prize giving , to catch my flight.
So all about the official closure and about the dinner tonight will be only on tomorrow evening , sorry …but….I know that there will be lots of pictures to look at.

Please look for the results to that site. They are preliminary now, then unofficial and then later in the night official and then we know for sure if we can congratulate the 2 German pilots with their title, the runners up with their great achievement and the 3d prize winners with theirs.
Congratulations to all pilots for their skilled and safe flying.
This was Ritz from Rayskala. CU tomorrow for one more Corner !

04.07. 18:11 Some info about the Challenger Trophies... by Marina !

Before receiving the prizes tomorrow it is nice to know a little bit more about the 2 Challenger Trophies which will be presented to the winners tomorrow from the 6th JWGC .

Here is the story from Marina.Thank you!
