23.06. 10:57 Official Practise day 2

It looks like another very good day , though I did not yet see clouds .
The results from practise day 1 were very good for Denmark [ Rasmus in the LS 1f with 105 km/h ]and Holland [ Peter who flew the task with a speed of 119 km/h in the discus 2 A] with 2 day winners and 1000 points. It does not help for the competition but it is a boost for the pilot and his team.
Not all pilots flew the task and some enjoyed the weather so much that they used the day for full practise. One of the Belgian boys, Peter, flew his very first 500 km. Not bad!!! Congratulations, Peter!

I noticed that there were no 1000 km tasks set in Finland but 699 km. was a good result.
I also noticed that some pilots made an outlanding, which I did not expect.

The Cocktail party, yesterdayevening was a great event and the local mayor was happy with us and we with him. On the tables were flags from the 21 nations and we took place at the table with our flag.
So I was sitting with the Dutch TC , Martin, who I did not know too well , but much better now.
The TC from the USA and Lithuania were with us too, as well as the TC's from the UK and Canada.
I was impressed with the young Lithuanian TC who is a competitor as well. He was a bit late at the TC meeting yesterday, but you have to be back first to attend, is n't it?
Vytautas was appointed so he has to do both jobs as good as he can.

Later today more about the museum we visited and the website were you can find more about this wonderful cottage. Off to briefing now.

23.06. 11:25 Briefing is over!

Sorry for the delay this morning, We are going to a more convenient system for the Ritz Corner , thanks to the effort of web guru Katja.

This morning the system of a TC briefing at 10.30 started and a pilots briefing at 10. This was done to keep the briefing as short as possible, so pilots can fly at 11 AM if possible.
.
The TC meeting yesterday only gave a few questions which were answered straight away or this morning. Meters and feet , were one of the points, as well as landings here after the flight.

This morning’s briefing had a few safety points one important one;
IF you do not have ELT or Tracking spot, LEAVE YOUR MOBILE ON and put it in your flying suit NOT in the glider[ incase of bailing out!]

The opening ceremony will be tomorrow at 9 AM as they expect very good weather. So it will be short! The young pilots will be happy with that.

The weather today is like yesterday----we are under the influence of a very strong high pressure system---- only a bit less clouds, though the clouds will be in the East first so that’s why the task is set to the East. Later when there are clouds in the West too, they come back via that area.
Temperature will be 24 dgr. Cloud base is forecasted at 2000 m at 1 PM and 2500 at 3 PM.
We noticed the first cloud, only ONE this time just before the TC briefing. Now at nearly 11 AM there are lot’s of clouds!

Tasks;
Club class; Polygon with 4 points -----261,4 km
Club class will start today from runway 26 R .
Standard class ; Polygon with 4 points -----305,2 km
Standard class will leave from runway 26 L as this runway is longer and for that reason better for the heavier gliders.

Thank you to Team France and Team Germany for a splendid evening yesterday. No more parties ahead at this stage!

Tracking devices are in 10 gliders, 5 in each class.
About out landings, Silva said, look for grass, do avoid potato fields as they are tough and might brake “your” tail and certainly sugar- beet fields, as landing there is “bloody expensive”. Never drive into the field for the retrieve WITHOUT asking the farmer’s permission.

That covers the briefing of this morning. The organization would love to have more files after flight to help the scoring office.

23.06. 12:05 Launch in progress ! Mannerheim!

Some more news about the Mannerheim Hunting Cottage, which we visited yesterday. It was built by 62 selected Finnish soldiers for the 75th birthday of the Marshal of Finland, Baron Carl ,Gustav, Emil Mannerheim, [1867-1952] one of the most significant great men in Finnish history .He was commander – in- Chief of 4 wars, Regent, President of the Republic of Finland and explorer.

After dinner we visited the little museum, the sauna and the Lake Punelia, in Loppi, which looked absolutely gorgeous, like a mirror with the sun shining on the trees around the lake.
Thank you to the organization for taking us there and for the warm reception by the take carers of the restaurant and museum.

Off to the field now, most gliders must be up in the air and from my yellow box I can see them HIGH up under the clouds. For sure they have another good day!
CU later with more……

23.06. 13:24 Startgates are open in both classes!

Launches were ready in a bit less then an hour, but not all pilots are flying! I still see gliders in front of the hangar for the inspection, which is very effective done on a time schedule.
Standard class was launched first and the start gate opened at;11.55.
Club class was launched straight after and the gate was open at ;12.26
The organization at the field is very effective and friendly. They are all youngsters and working very HARD. Compliments to them!!!!!
Also to the “tuggies” who are doing a great job.
Finnish pilot Aku, flying 2 T, was the first to go on track at 11.58!
Also early starts in club class, where the Polish pilots decided to go quickly at 12.35!
At 1 PM, I can hear the tugs still going up for late starters or guest pilots.

Will keep you updated when there is news! Tasks are not too long today, as the pilots seem to have a few good days ahead. Tomorrow they have to be ready and in good mood and spirit to start the 6th FAI Junior World Championships.

23.06. 15:22 First finishes at 2.50 PM !

At 2.50 PM the first gliders arrived back.
AA, BW3, PW, and the 3 Finnish pilots T2, N1 and N3. N1 and N3 finished in a nice formation on special request by the press and with the permission of Wille, the field marshal. Luckily Silva introduced him this morning, as he is one of twins . Wellu, even the names are nearly similar, is the scrutineer and there is a stunning resemblance.
A few minutes later more gliders arrived as; TK, KS, T1, N4, ET, N8.
Then 566, 7Q, ER, GX, RD.
Will go back to see more finishes.Stand by and look for results to the site.

23.06. 16:19 Good speed!

More gliders arrived and of course I can not see them all when I rush up and down but I will keep you informed as much as possible. Here are the next ones!
After 15.25; HS, C41, 98, ED, 41, W, 194, CM, V20, TW, 74, EP, 28, S, G2, CC, VK, EA, Y1, BF,
Several speed finishes, some straight in’s and ……some pilot’s nearly forgot their wheel!!!!
At this stage in both club and standard class a speed of 108/9 km/h. Still a lot of pilots to arrive, so this will change.
In between the last member of the jury has arrived; from Finland Lasse Virtanen. Patrick is on his way to Helsinki to pick up the chief steward Axel Reich.

Tomorrow can come. Everybody here is ready, the pilots are ready and eager , as well as their crew and the weather is fabulous . All ingredients for a great and I hope safe competition.
Let’s go for it!

If there is any news I will be back later in the evening, if not see you tomorrow . The results will be on ,in the worst case , within 1 hour after the pilot’s return. So ….keep an eye on them, Ville, the chief scorer will be as quick as possible,to put them on, after they have been delivered or send in by mail.

23.06. 16:40 About the outlandings....

Talking about the outlandings which you can see on the task and result site;
These are “virtual”, the pilots have just abandoned the task, so do not worry! With 4.5 m it would be a bit weird to outland, but….everything is possible. Just to let you know!

23.06. 17:47 Wrap up from the practise days !

Just heard that not one, but 2 Belgian pilots had a real good day yesterday. It was not Peter but Pieter ,who flew his very first 500 km. and Peter flew his second one; WELLDONE!
I slowly get to know all the names and call signs.
Not much more to say. The speed in standard class went up to 116 km/h. today, as you might have noticed, with pilot Patrick from Holland, flying it. 2 Great practice days as well for the Dutch team and….. don’t forget that Patrick and Peter are Dutch NATIONAL Champion and……also important, Peter passed his high school exams. Congratulations!
CU tomorrow!
