June 24th The first official competition day
24.06. 08:51 6th Junior World Championships about to begin
!
With most countries flags hanging now, the weather, as it seems in perfect
condition, the pilots after 2 perfect training days in good mood, the organizers
on their best, this 6th Junior World Championship will start with the opening
today at 9. Immediately after, the TC briefing will be at 9.30 and at 10.00
the pilots briefing. At this stage first launch still at 11.00
Yesterdays winners in club class Dutch pilot Tim Kuijpers and in
standard class Dutch pilot Patrick van Breemen Schneider. Good on you guy’s!
Preparing now for the opening. CU later.
24.06. 09:24 Opening was short and to the point!
It is
9.10 now and the opening ceremony is over. Splendid! Short and it still had all
ingredients to get goose bumps! Flags were risen from the FAI, the Finnish
Association and the National Flag, teams were standing in front of them in their
nice team outfits. Only Silva and 1 official had a few words and ….it was over.
The young pilots looked relieved…I think!!! At least big smiles on their faces.
So the first task will be set for both classes and off they go. I
wish them , also on behalf of the reading world, the very best. In between June
24 and July 4 a lot of things will happen in the world of these young pilots.
Some will be happy, there are only 2 winners, some will be sad or disappointed,
some angry with their selves, but I hope all of them will go home with the best
memories on a great time here in Rayskala.
I wish all pilots fast,
pleasant and above all safe flights.
Back after briefing!!
24.06. 11:04 " Are you ready to rock and roll"
---Silva.
Briefing is over! LONG tasks!
Club class; Polygon with
5 points---task distance 531,6 km. Standard Class; Polygon with 7
points---task distance 623,5 km. First launch at 11.15---standard class!
Runway in use 30. Finish line in use 26.
The briefing opened
with a wonderful video made by the young German Hubertus---for us---Hubi
Huverman. During the whole competition he will be the organization movie man.
That he did a great job with this first video and the music going with it
was clear. He received a huge applause.
Much more applause today as
Silva introduced his team; The office ” babes “ are popular, we could hear.
As popular , all young field runners and Wille , their “boss” asked the
pilots to be careful, “ watch out do not hit them, we need them all”. The
scoring team was presented, as well as the tow pilots. The search and rescue
team “hopes that we do not need them”.
The weather; We are still under
the influence of this fantastic high pressure system. With 25 dgr. at 16.00, a
cloud base of 2000 m and a visibility of 50 km. plus the pilots should have a
good day ahead. No showers expected in the competition area.
The safety
committee was formed with French pilot and current world champion Killian
Walbrou nominated and accepted in club class and Swiss pilot Felix Schneebelie
in standard class. Chief steward Axel Reich completes the team.
There
are 10 trackers in use today. Please look at the pictures at the site, there
are a few great ones. Follow the tracking system if you want to know what’s
happening during the day. I will try to keep you informed as well. Off
to the launches now. CU later!
24.06. 13:20 JWGC has started !
Launches were very
interesting. The first launch of this 6th Junior World Championship was for
Belgian pilot Tijl Schmelzer in the Discus 2 AX with call sign 21. He is flying
his FOURTH junior WGC. After Nitra he flew in HusBos, Rieti and now in Rayskala.
Would there be more pilots flying here their 4th JWGC??????
First
start was delayed with 5 minutes, so at 11.20 the first launch was a fact.
In 44 minutes the standard class was up and the gate opens at 12.24.Pilots
went up high.
The first pilot being launched in club class was also a
Belgian pilot. Peter Bertels in BR , a standard Libelle, was the first pilot to
go. At 12.37 all pilots were up in the air.Last pilot who was regular launched,
today was the Lithuanian T C and club class pilot Vytautas.
Unfortunately one Belgian club class pilot had to come back, lift was
not too good at that time. But straight after all pilots were up, he had a
re-launch. Dad was not too worried, he just said with a smile ;” Second
attempt!”
Start gate opens at 13.08 for club class. Before there was
a huge dark cloud keeping the sun away and bringing some problems to the club
class pilots. At one stage 5 were low and fighting to hang in, but they found
lift and in that thermal first 15 and then 19 pilots ended up after their launch
, climbing to be high enough to feel comfortable.
In club class there
are 2 female pilots both flying for France . Andrew Maddocks flying AA [LS
8] for Australia in St. class, hopes to fly his 623,5 km. today. With that he
will pass mum’s best distance ever flown, which is 580 km. Mum looked a bit
worried, [with a smile] , but for sure she will be the happiest mum in the world
when Andrew comes back today, with 623.5 km. in his pocket.
Off for
lunch now and chasing more news for you.
24.06. 14:51 Pilots are on their way for 531.6 and 623.5 km
!!!!
14.30; All glider pilots in St.class have started . Time between
the first pilot to start [12.19 !!!!!?????] and the last one [12.53] was a bit
more then half an hour. They need at least 5 hours before they are back.
The standard class had an unexpected and not announced drop of rain on
the second leg, but as far as I heard it did not cause too much trouble.
In club class pilots started between 12.29 and 13.38, so a much bigger
spread in time. They also need atleast 5 hours.
Off to briefing now, as
at 15.00 there will be a TC meeting to check if everybody is happy.
24.06. 16:47 Still super weather !!!
16.15; Now I am back
and study the start times from club class, I guess the time 12.29 is just a
mistake and should be 13.29, as the line was not open then, it opened at
13.08.We will wait and see! So not too much difference in time then either.
I only just made it in time to the TC briefing, where the TC’s
introduced themselves to each other. A few changes in the system. TC
briefing will be now at 9.00 daily and the briefing at 9.30, to give teams more
time between briefing and first launch. WHEN….the weather is very good, they
announce ONE day ahead a different briefing time. About 6 more items were
part of the discussion. One was the closing time today at 20.00, as specially
the Libelles might need some time, but Silva is pretty sure they will be back
home in time. Silva organized the meeting to “see and feel” the opinions
from “his “ TC’s. Everybody seems happy with what has happened till now.
Pilots are still flying happy and high. The first finishes are expected
around 6.In the hangar is now a screen with the tracking system for the guests
here.
They always say, old news is no news , so I try to be as quick as
possible with the news. Sometimes there will be mistakes, which I cannot correct
myself with this system, but Katja is very quick when I need her. THANK you to
her! Apologies for that, but…I try to be as accurate as possible.
24.06. 17:41 Finishes within an hour ???? Biggest task ever in
JWGC ?????
17.15; Though the weather here looks still as gliding weather
looks in a good gliding-book , the pilots do have their little problems en
route. Some shout with joy about 5 or even 7 m. lift, others fly through light,
some trough heavier rain. Some have reached TP 4 in standard class and some TP 3
in club class. 17.45; Silva just tells us that he expects the standard class
back in about half an hour, maybe just an hour. According to the tracking
system, which has a delay of 15 minutes , they should be here soon. Wow that
would be so great!!!!! It seems that for a JWGC this is the biggest task,
ever set. I check it for you. All excited now, so I better go to the field.
CU later and standby for the finish[es] of day 1 in Finland where the
weather seems the best in Europe at the moment. Though I hear that Holland and
the UK are sharing the good weather with us.
24.06. 18:33 Finishes !!!!
18.00; Several crewmembers on the
ground saw their teams flying over the airfield of Rayskala. Now the first
finisher of this comps is in standard class as far as I could follow it ,it
looks so; I heard EZ but not saw him so he might be in. 1805 T1 18.07 2T
14 FL 14 FX 15 ET 17 WB 17 4J 18 Y1 19 RD 19 ER
19 27 19 N8 20 AA
Off to the field again.
24.06. 19:15 Club class is finishing too !
I was just back in
time to see the first pilot arrive in club class. 18. 23 HS 25 IF 25
74 27 47 27 BW3 27 57 27 AY 28 IS 28 CX 28 2C
I heard from Silva that he is calling in the times by mobile to have the
preliminary scores on a s a p, so it is not necessary that I run up and down,
you should have them immediately. More gliders in without time; SI, 2A, SF,
IV, DI, KC, VK, AX, YX, CC, 99, AY, C1.Please look for more results on the site.
Thanks. What a gorgeous day. Not everybody unfortunately made it back home
At this stage at 19.10 we have 4 outlandings TW [Austria], C1 [ UK],V1 [
Denmark]and 2S [ Belgium].
Back later!
24.06. 19:34 Some more news and facts , while gliders finish
!
So Andrew Maddocks [AA] from Australia has beaten the longest distance
from mum now. Up to 100 km more and he beats dad as well. Dad’s best is 680!.
Must be possible,or……It seems the weather tomorrow is even better .Let’s wait
and see.
I was here 21 years ago as TC for the Dutch team during the EGC
. The weather on June 24 1988 was difficult and we flew between showers and
thunderstorms. My friend reminded me that the task was set that day as an AAT [
cat’s cradle] ,---- find your own way ----WE do n’t know it anymore and the
meteo finished his talk with “HAPPY OUTLANDING!!!” What a difference with
the weather now!!!! Please have a look at the wonderful pictures from Antti
Lehto and Kai Monkkonen. At 19.30 I still hear gliders fly over. Still half
an hour to land here! More news later in the wrap-up of day 1!
24.06. 21:30 Wrap-up from this beautiful competition day 1
!!!
21.00; Well this is the last news for today. It has been a long day for
several people, including the chief marshal Wille, who was up at 6.30 and was
busy till 20.30 when the last pilot was counted for! The last glider arriving
home was a Belgium Libelle, but the other Belgium pilot [FU] just could not make
it home. So more out landings. Not making it home either was glider N4
[Switzerland] and Z8 [Sweden].
I spoke with a young 20 year old Finnish
pilot, asking him if he had flown here in such good weather before. He admitted
that he had even flown in better, weather, but this day was not bad he said,
though he had problems on the last 2 TP’s , when big blue holes appeared!!!!!
The other Finnish pilot , Aku , father of a beautiful young baby, had a great
day and looks to be 2d. Belgium pilot Tijl was very pleased with his first
day , so was Dutch pilot Rene. For sure the winners will be even more happy.More
about them tomorrow when we have the unofficial results. Best speed at this
stage today in club class was 100 km/h over 531.6 km. In standard class the
best speed at this stage was 114km. over 623.5 km.
It seems that
tomorrow’s weather will be even better, so be part of the JWGC with us tomorrow
again. At the request of many readers, web guru, Katja and her “mate” have
changed the Corner to have the last story on the top. So that happened.THANK
YOU!! A full but very satisfying day!! See you tomorrow!
