June 26th The third official competition day

26.06. 08:58 TERVETULOA !!

8.45; Good morning everybody.
Early mornings here .Grid opens at 7.30 and when I arrive for breakfast at 8.15, some gliders are already on it and been at the scale.
I checked with some people about the sudden death of Michael Jackson, but not all of them seem to have him as his idol! For sure it hits a few!
Off to the TC briefing now and the briefing.

26.06. 09:02 Todays tasks !!!

Tasks for today competition day 3;
Club class; polygon with 4 points;-----359.1 km
Standard class ;polygon with 5 points-----438,9 km
First launch at 11.30 Runway in use 08.
Back later.

26.06. 10:44 Ready to go for competition day 3 !

9.55; Briefings are over .
And…as the first launch is supposed to be at 11.30 there is a lot of time, specially for the teams as they like their discussion before flight and straight after briefing.
Items from the TC meeting came back in the pilots briefing and the most important was the finishes from yesterday.
11 Warnings were given for low finishes and dangerous maneuvers while finishing ….that should NOT happen!!!! I totally agree with that.
One warning for taxiing in the parking area.

I still think finish line 12 is the most beautiful in the world BUT….as Silva said yesterday morning already in the briefing, you are not allowed to fly too low over the lake. Some pilots did “forget “ this yesterday and got a warning today. Quite rightly!!!! It IS dangerous!
It is really spectacular to see 7 gliders arrive over the trees and see them in some kind of formation over the lake, but it is scaring to see them arrive too low.
I am sure the pilots got the message today if not…they will be punished on the hand with a stick, like in the past , by Silva himself !!!!

The King of POP is dead, even Michael made the briefing this morning as first item.

Sven, flying glider 47, celebrates his 21 birthday today, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY SVEN .

Doping control is possible . No exemption notes have been given to the organizers 21 days before the comps , so everybody seems to be healthy and we should have no problems.

The winners of yesterday were honored with a bottle and a cap with winner day 2 on it. In club class Will Ellis [WE] from the UK and in standard Felix Schneebelie [KC] from Switserland were the recipients. Well done guys !

The unofficial scores from day 1 are out ,so 24 hours before they are official.

26.06. 10:47 More.....

I missed the last part of my story , so here you are;
Meteo; We are still under the influence of the “ high” . There is an Easterly flow . Temperatures 26 dgr. at 16.00 Wind from the East with 5 knots on the ground and about 10 at the boundary layer. Visibility 50 km plus !!!
At this stage now clouds visible!!!!

Briefing was finished with some words for the “boys”, by Silva.
The ladies in the office are “getting crazy”….PLEASE WEAR A T SHIRT when you visit them!!!!!! So with laughter the briefing was finished.

Back later!

26.06. 13:23 Start gates open, pilots on their way!

13.00; First glider to go up today was V1 in standard class. Smooth launchings and at 12.02 they were up in the air. Start gate will open for them[ is already open now,] at 12.32.
Not so many clouds today at 11.00 ,but at 12.00 a few more have popped up. Axel, chief steward and in the safety committee, who was launched first said over the radio that he was already at 1700 m. so it looks like another great day.

After a short delay from 8 minutes to let the colonna cars and bicycles move again behind the safety car, N3 was launched in Club class. An extra small delay, as a very observant tuggie saw some locals looking and enjoying our beautiful sport….. in his flight path. He made a go- around to give the marshals time,[ who were there in a flash shouting out loud with their low voice as only Finnish people can do, ] to tell them, they were definitely on the wrong spot.
At 13.46 launches were finished and in 30 minutes the gate will open.[13.16] Open now too!!!

Compliments to the field runners , they run like “mad” and work so hard to get the cable as quick as possible to the crew to hook it on the glider.2 Of the boys are sons from Finnish top pilot Antti Lehto and…also here we have girls ,[ I saw 2,] with real ”girl-power”!!!
To the 8 tuggies ; WELLDONE!!!!

With relatively short tasks, there might be a bit more tactical flying today, specially with their starttime. What weather will give the best speed to fly around? Early or a bit later ??

Back soon !

26.06. 13:46 I would like you to meet .....Hubi !

13.30; While waiting for the pilots to come back, I try to introduce you to interesting people by writing a profile . They do it either by their selves or I interview them. The first profile is from somebody I really got to admire in a very short time and….I am not the only one.; Hubi the video man. As he says: “ We both do some kind of similar work.We want to share with the people the feeling for our great sport.”
Here is what he wrote to me;

------So you already know my Name Hubertus W. Huvermann. Of course everyone calls me Hubi. I´m 25 years old and I´m from Germany. I´m a gliderpilot since 1997. In my club I work as a flightinstructor in a honary post.
In generell I´m studying fine Arts at the University in Essen.
The whole videothing is just for fun. I started making gliding videos and I put them on YouTube. Than I got a call by the organisation of the WGC in Luesse 2008. They asked me, if I would make some videos of the competition. So I did.
In Luesse I met quite a lot people that liked my videos. I met the finnish team and they asked me to come to Räyskälä to do it again. They called and I just came. Quite simple. It´s good if people like what I do. It´s a pleasure for me to be part of an event that makes the people from all over the world come together.
by the way: It´s quite a lot work to do, to get a video ready to play it. It keeps me up all night just to present it right before the briefing.... than I go on shooting the new pictures for the next video... so the things keep going...-----

Thank you Hubi and now I have read how much time it cost him to do his job so well a bigger THANK YOU!

Time for a break now!

26.06. 15:11 SUPER weather !!!!!!On the first legs both classes go like a "rocket" !!!

15.00; No analyses from start times yet, as indeed a tactical game is played up there high in the air! In standard class the first pilots , the 3 Germans and one Danish pilot, started at 13.33 and one hour later not all start times are on.
In club class the first to leave was Tim from Holland at 13.39. Nearly one hour later also here not all start times are on yet.
So in both classes at least nearly ONE hour difference.

It seems SUPER weather, at least the first leg goes with big speed as I hear. In standard class some pilots have had their 2d TP. I also hear words as “5 m.” “CLOUDSTREET’ on the whole first leg……But they are out of reach…. now we can’t hear them anymore…..
But you can follow the pilots with the spot- tracker-system. Maybe a bit late but they are in gliders KC, 149, SI, V1, W8, and W8, XC, N1 TF.
Have a look! You can also tune in on the team pages from different countries by clicking on their flag under pics & stories.

26.06. 16:31 On their way back from up North !

16.00 update; Pilots must be up N. now, about 172 km out. Here in Finland the airspace is not the easiest . Every day the pilots find on their task information, which airspace –zones are open and how high they can fly in them. If you stick to the rules , it is no problem at all.
Today most zones have 2300 m as level and one 1400 m. They are marked as p.e. K,J,N,or Z1, Z2.
It is good to hear that pilots sometimes warn each other, “Be aware of…” so that no unnecessary and "very expensive " penalty points have to be given.
It is even more difficult when the nice clouds are in the “forbidden zone” and it is blue in your zone.

In between crews enjoy swimming IN the lake or boating ON the lake, shopping, biking, sleeping, ....!The weather is not only nice in the air but also for us on the ground!

The organization has made some safety areas at finish line 12 [at the lake,] as they expect local guests/visitors for the weekend!

26.06. 17:27 First standard class gliders back home !

17.15. The first gliders in standard class have arrived back home , much quicker then I expected! The next hour a lot of gliders will come back!!!! Weather still GOOD!!!!!
Anxious to find out who took the right decision, the early or the late starters.

After his flight I will have a short interview with Killian from France for tomorrows profile.
More news later! And…look at the result site for times .

26.06. 19:22 Another splendid day has finished !

18.45; Some pilots did not take any risk of being too low over the lake and they came in with a nice speed finish. A few times after 18.00 ,we had peak hour, with lot’s of gliders arriving and crews were running , as they were asked not go in by car, but push the glider first to the site. The finish line 12 is not wide but very long. This worked well.

From pilots flying hors concourse I heard that the weather more and more improved during the day and was at its best around 16.00. So we can “translate” this in the scores for today and looking at the early and later starters, the later ones had the bigger advantage of the weather. Before, the days decreased a bit in the end.
In any case it seems that the Dutch pilots had a good day with 2 day winners at this stage!!! Patrick in standard class with a nice speed of 123.5 km/h and Rene with 110 km /h. Great effort!

Two times World champion Markku Kuittinen flew over today on a 500 km task using Rayskala as a TP . He is out of competition- flying since 2 years, but still flies for hobby.
Nice to hear his call sign MK again.

I had my interview with Killian, what a great young man.
That will be on tomorrow! A long day , but a super one!!!
bye for now!
