28.06. 08:40 TERVETULOA !! Good morning!
8.15; Good morning
we are back to nice blue skies, so yesterday was just a tiny little mistake! It
is still a bit "crisp" but the sun is shining and that sun feels nice warm.In
todays profile you will meet young Argentinian pilot Horatio Piombo, who flies
in standard class. Off to breakfast, TC meeting and pilots meeting and
then...back to you with the latest.
28.06. 10:14 Tasks for today !
10.00; Briefings are over. The
task is for both classes; an AAT with 4 areas. Task time is 4.00 hours, this
might be changed on the grid depending on….. Task distance; 158,6 km / 611,6
km[376,6 km] Runway 30 and finish line 26 in use! First possible launch
at 11.15. More news in a few minutes, thought the task first.
28.06. 10:54 Weather and " newsy " news !
Briefing was opened
with a great promotion video today about Argentina, same as was presented for
the IGC in their bid to “win” the WGC for Gonzales Chaves. And …they did win,
for 2012! What a great place to go too and how nice that we have Horatio
from Argentina, today in “our” PROFILE.
Happy birthday to Christopher
Cough from Canada, who turned 25 today! Angelo Montalti, the scorer from the
JWGC and WGC in Italy has arrived on a tourist trip together with his wife
Adele, a very famous photographer.
The new TC from Italy was presented
;Elena Fergnani. She is the sister from our pilot Nicola and she will fly, as I
heard, in the womens in Hungary in a few weeks. She studies at the university
from Bremen.
The weather; There is still the low in the East but the
rest of Scandinavia is under high pressure. Heikki showed us today 2 models he
is working with. One predicts thermal activity from 11.30 till 20.00 up to 2000
m., the other one dry thermals, so no clouds. The temperature will be 26 dgr.
today and “we” might have some showers in the NNW part of the competition area,
but they should not give a problem. It was Heikki’s last weather forecast today
as he goes back to work . A huge applause from all in the hangar to say thank
you. So Janne will be there next week and he seems to be Heikki’s professor!!!!
So for that reason an AAT was set. Launches are delayed till 11.30!
Spot trackers in gliders ; 1F, 28, 2C, ET, H2, HS, IY, NX, RD, Y.
A huge achievement for Silva and his team. National TV , section sport,
brought more then 3 minutes of news about the JWGC, with young and good looking
Finnish pilot Akuu Jaakkola representing the pilots with a nice story. Most
news about sport goes to Rally’s [car] , Formula 1 and ice hockey. More news
later.
28.06. 12:08 Launches delayed ! Yesterday; how was the free time
spend !
Launches are delayed now to 12.15. Yesterday several friends
visited like we did, Helsinki. It was pretty crowded in some streets as we could
see, [ we only heard later,] that the Gay Parade went through some main streets.
We went to the Mannerheim museum in the “nice” area of Helsinki. After seeing
his his cottage and sauna it was nice to be welcome in the [ rented] house he
lived in as president from Finland. We had a one hour guided tour, very
interesting. Made pictures from the Belgian and Dutch Embassy and thought
the Americans had the most beautiful one.UK was not bad either specially the old
building! Other pilots/crew visited Turku the little harbor place. Some
ladies went on a shopping trip to the Hackman outlet, not coming back with empty
hands. As you know glass is very famous in Finland and the organizers
advised us the Littala glass and the jewelry from Kulta heskes if I spell this
well. Swimming was popular as well as resting, sitting behind the laptop and
some fishing rods were available for those who like that sport and one rowing
boat. Parties in the evening too ; a beach party and a BBQ party. For
sure the mosquitos had the time of their life. Back to the field.
28.06. 14:08 Booming weather !
13.45; Startline open for club
class at 13.41 and for standard class at 14.15. Tasks have been changed to
task time 3.30 for club class and 3 hours for standard class.
It took a
while before it heated up enough to start with the launches. But at 12.30 we
heard Kiristy [nearly tight] Kirrealla [tight] and VEDA. Ready or GO !!!!On all
a’s should be points but I do not have them in my machine! TK was the first
to be launched today. It was still pretty blue then, but clouds played a bit of
a game in the WSW, popping up, disappearing , reappearing and then BOOM they
arrived, but even in the blue, pilots climbed up to over 1000 m. even were some
at 1500/1600 m. Temperature went up to 27 dgr.
Very best regards to the
world for all who know her from Rita . She visits today with her son. From her I
heard that Aku Jaakkola flies Tapios [Savoilanen] former glider.
I have
an interview with a very famous Finnish glider pilot!CU later !
28.06. 15:47 I would like you to meet Horacio Piombo !
Young
standard class pilot Horacio [ N9]was so kind to introduce himself to all of .
Here is his story.
-----Well first of all thank you Ritz for inviting us
to write in this space. We’ve come from very far to compete for the very first
time in the Junior Worlds, so this is something really new for Argentina. It’s
very exciting to finally meet in the flesh and also fly together with the
world’s finest pilots, some of them we’ve read about in the IGC Rankings, and
some others with whom I’ve played so many hours of Condor together in our PCs,
like for example Peter and Tim from The Netherlands. Regarding the championship
organization itself we’ve felt pretty much at home since we arrived due to the
cordiality and friendship of the finnish people. Jorma Laine who picked us up at
Vantaa Intl Airport and rented us his car, Competition Director Silva who plays
a parental role that fits really well in a Junior Championships, Teemu Sundström
has helped us so much setting up here at Räyskälä, Erkki Heinonen provided us
with all the important information regarding the finnish flatland, Antti
Koskiniemi with whom I had the pleasure of flying my first task over Finland on
board Duo Discus “98” and all the people and authorities of Nuorisoilmailijat ry
who gently rented us thier LS-8a “N9”, such a great flying machine. I’m hoping
that this trip to Finland serves to encourage other young argentinian pilots to
participate in the Junior Worlds Championships so that I can have a team mate in
2011!
Anyway, we’re sure we’ll be seeing some of you in the 2012 WGC in
Adolfo Gonzáles Chaves.
Team Argentina------
When I said thank
you to him this morning, I told him after briefing that I would love to come too
Argentina as well, to write the last story there and to finish my Ritz- Corner
-carreer, he only said with some unbelieve in his eyes:" Are you stopping then"!
15.40;Skies still look well. Pilots are on their way for 3.30 and 3
hours. If you check the starttimes you can see what time they will be back home.
28.06. 17:10 Finishes to be expected soon !
17.00 update; As
French pilot Killian was the first to start at 13.53 we should expect him back
at 17.23.The last pilot in that class left at 15.18 and also still had to fly
his 3.30 hour. In standard class the first to leave was at 14.24 so in 3
hours he should be back at around 17.24. Unfortunately some outlandings as
well at this stage; P7, C1, NX.
28.06. 18:06 One by one the first pilots came back !
18.00;
The first finishers are back. They were EP, CG, 74, at around 17.30. At
17.45 we saw V1, ED, C41 and at 17.50 2A, S and HS. They are still arriving now.
Today the average speed is important, so not really necessary for us to keep
the finish times ; we only know later today how they flew! I am under the
impression that a few pilots will change place today!
People are
standing under the wings to find shade, while waiting for the rest of the pilots
to come back. And that in Finland!!!!Most people look very " RED", the wind and
the high temperature will give some pain tonight.
P7 ‘s trailer arrived
already back at the airfield.
28.06. 19:26 Keep looking at the results, there will be some
changes!!!
19.00 update ; Pilots mentioned that today was a tricky, but
interesting day. High up N. they saw thunderstorms and we can see thunderstorms
forming now East from Lahti, about 100 km from here, but they pass by Rayskala
from N to S. So no worries!
More outlandings, indeed it was tricky
today! This time I saw on the list 149, 28, 1F, DI, FU, S1. Not all pilots
have arrived back home, still one not accounted for, but I hear he is landing
now.
Did you know that this airfield is the biggest in Finland? They
launch yearly 4 to 6000 gliders. There are about 5000 parachute-jumps a year and
they have 1000 members The airfield has 6 runways and there is a lot of room
for finishing gliders, it is just huge. The camping is huge as well, in the
middle of the forest and counts 140 permanent caravans. Thank you to Marina for
this info!
The manager to organize all of this is Mari and she does it
with great pleasure as that shows, but also with know-how and efficiency. She is
never stressed and always has a smile for everybody. She is a glider pilot , but
has more hours with “ jumping out of a plane “. She has one cleaning -lady
for the motel , also part of this business and lots of friendly helping hands.
If you want to meet a real power-girl, you should meet Mari !!!
